Ubuntu Community Week Collector Card #11

With a little over a week to go until Ubuntu Community Week, we're on the home stretch with only a few more collectible cards to go. Who will they be? Are they someone you know in a town near you? If so, why not buy them a $drink in exchange for an autograph?

Our eleventh Ubuntu Community Week collector card is a most powerful wizard who used to practice the dark arts of proprietary software in companies around the world. Now all that has all changed. Meet Alan Bell.

Alan is one of the amazing people out in our local Ubuntu communities spreading Ubuntu by helping people understand the magic and wizardry of free software.

Leading up to Ubuntu Community Week, I will be releasing a card a day* for you to tweet to all of your followers. Happy tweeting!

On Personal Rules

One of the rules I adopted when I first became an adult (yes, that long ago) was to never, ever "work" on my birthday.

This rule has served me well. A day of reflection and time to spend any way I want without obligation is purifying. I'm sharing this rule with you so you too can consider adopting it. So, wherever you are, if it's your birthday please raise a glass, put your feet up and think about the future you want to build.

Dear friends, family, and colleagues in Ubuntu-land, IT management-land, and beyond I hereby declare this my official day off. Once I have finished writing this article the phone will be off, instant-messaging client off, e-mail off. If you need to reach me I'm afraid you'll have to use semaphores or smoke-signals.

Regular Ubuntu programming and issuing Ubuntu Community Week collector cards will resume tomorrow.*

* The astute reader may point out that the act of posting this was technically a violation of my own rule. However, I consider Ubuntu a labour of love so exception is hereby granted in part.

Ubuntu Community Week Collector Card #7

Continuing our Star Wars theme, our seventh Ubuntu Community Week collector card is also from a galaxy far, far away. Apparently, they've discovered and downloaded the recipe for Ubuntini too.

You may know this community star by his unique ability to transfix an audience using only Ubuntu and a projector. Meet Vancouver's own Joe Liau.

Joe is one of the amazing people out in our local Ubuntu communities spreading Ubuntu by stunning them with demos of what it can do to make their lives more fun. He's rarely seen out of costume though, so you'll have to visit Vancouver to get a glimpse.

Leading up to Ubuntu Community Week, I will be releasing a card a day* for you to collect and to beam to nearby galaxies. Will they too adopt Ubuntu?

Vancouver's Natty U-Party! (Part 5)

This is part of an ongoing series about Ubuntu Vancouver's U-Party "A Celebration of Ubuntu and Unity", held on June 17th 2011. (Part 1) (Part 2) (Part 3) (Part 4)

No U-Party (Ubuntu party) is complete without Ubuntu's famous cocktail, the Ubuntini.

We feature Ubuntinis at our parties and we offer them both in "native" form and modified form (without alcohol). To keep things simple for our bartender and to keep the party flowing, Ubuntu Vancouver's U-Party Whal Crew opted to pre-mix to the exact specifications called for by the original recipe:

We were delighted that most party-goers tasted this magical Ubuntu elixir, and we hope that they'll tell others about the experience, especially their local bartender. That is, if they remember it ;)

Get your official Ubuntini here. We hope you'll raise a glass for Ubuntu at your next party!

I will be sharing some more highlights of our U-Party in upcoming posts. Thanks for reading.

Martin is one of the amazing people out in our local Ubuntu communities spreading Ubuntu by using his startling mix of artistic talent and his deep passion for free (as in libre) software.

Ubuntu Community Week Collector Card #4

Not very often are we witnesses to the birth of a brand new Ubuntu community!

Our fourth Ubuntu Community Week Collector Card is sure to appreciate in value due to its rarity. I'm planning to frame this one and have it autographed one day...

This card features a man who is charting new territory in the Middle East. He's relatively new to Ubuntu but that doesn't stop him from rolling up his sleeves and contributing in a profound way. Meet Omar Almahmoud.

Omar is one of the amazing people out in local Ubuntu communities spreading Ubuntu by using his entrepreneurial talents.

Leading up to Ubuntu Community Week, I will be releasing a card a day* for you to collect and to startle unsuspecting naysayers. Please be gentle though. We're all human.
